After tons of research, which actually means watching countless youtube videos and reading hundreds of blogs about curriculum choices out there I have finally made this year’s big decisions! Honestly, I surprised myself with the choices that I made but I am also really happy with the things we picked and I think they are going to work really well with our family!
My seven years old son, who is registered as a third grader and is also my ADHD child will be using:
Language Arts: Language Lessons for a Living Education Lvl 2
Reading: All About Reading Lvl 2
Math: Math Lessons for a Living Education Lvl 3
Extra Math: Prodigy and Khan Academy
Social Studies: The Story of the World Vol. 1
Social Studies: Canadian Flyer Book Series
Science: The Sassafras Science Adventures Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
My five year old daughter, who is registered as a kindergartener and is also my very delicate and emotional child will be using:
Language Arts: The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts & Literature Primer & Lvl. K
Reading: How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Math: The Good and The Beautiful Math Lvl K
Social Studies: The Story of the World Vol. 1
Social Studies: Canadian Flyer Book Series
Science: The Sassafras Science Adventures Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Art will consist of projects from our social and science units, famous artist studies, art projects, tours of art galleries and hands-on activities classes such as sculpting or ceramic painting. As another part of the arts, we are going to experience a live play!
Music will be both an independent and group activity. My son will be continuing to learn the guitar, while we all plan to learn the wooden flute. We are also going to study some of the famous musicians and see some live musical performances as our music appreciation portion of the subject.
Health and physical education are learned a lot by simply living a healthy and well-rounded lifestyle, although this year I figured we would try “Maturation and Sexual Reproduction” by The Good and The Beautiful as well as the books “Where Do Babies Come From” and “Why Boys And Girls Are Different” to add some extra resources to our discussion. Both children will be participating in gymnastics and swimming lessons as their formal physical education but if you’re a parent I can assume you know that this is not all the physical activity they are getting!
I hope that this gives you an idea of what we will be working with this year and maybe it will help you as you make your own choices! Remember that this is just what is working for us right now, that doesn’t mean it will work for everyone, it doesn’t even mean it will work for us in the future so please make sure you are picking things that you think will really work with your family and your child’s learning needs!
We just started using All About Spelling with my youngest son and we just love it but I have never tried All About Reading.
We actually used All About Spelling for Gr1, it was very helpful! We only use All About Reading now but I get my son to practice spelling with the word cards that come with the AAR!
Loving the information on this web site, you have done great job on the posts.
